This post started out with me thinking about constructive criticism and how this affects developers. The area I want to focus on specifically is code reviews and how they can be made more positive. Most constructive criticism advice focuses on how to leave more effective feedback. I feel it’s also immensely helpful to be able to take as much as possible from any criticism. Problem Early on in my development life my workflow went something like this:

This year I’ve been together with my wife for eight great years. And while it’s been reasonably smooth sailing, the subject that created the most waves for us is probably a usual suspect for most: finances. This was especially so after we had our first child and my wife stopped working. To navigate the waves, we took a step back and changed our perspective. Do you have a partner? Who doesn’t have a job?

So much to do, I still got so much to do! From the Dutch song “Zoveel te doen” (ik heb nog zoveel te doen!) by Toontje Lager I’ve been busy my whole life. I’m always looking for something new to try, something to learn, something to make. There’s simply no time to stand still. I believe that I have to keep moving. To me work is very important and I put a lot of energy into it.

Have you ever stopped to think about how lucky you are, developer? We live in a very unique momentum where us, software developers, are very privileged. And the reason is very simple: apart from a computer, we don’t need any other raw materials to create amazing things. Naturally, you need knowledge. But you can get all necessary technical knowledge for free on the Internet! If you want to be a developer, it will be just a matter of time and patience.
